Empress Matilda, 1102 CE - 1167 CE
Empress Matilda was chosen by her father, Henry I, to succeed him to the throne, a decision that was much disputed by the English people and her cousin Stephen of Blois. In 1141 during a period in English history known as the Anarchy, Matilda was ready to be coronated Queen, but was chased away by opposing London crowds. Matilda's son Henry, was chosen by Stephen to be his heir and was crowned Henry II in 1154 Eventually, Matilda returned to Normandy and assisted her husband in the courts there, providing political advice to Henry II during the early years of his reign.
